You may think that following an Autoimmune Protocol means your snacking habit has to disappear, right? Going from endless options, to a more restricted list of foods may feel overwhelming, especially when trying to find “fun” foods for munching on, desserts, or special occasions. Thankfully, that’s not 100% true. Thanks to some innovative real food companies making snack worthy treats with just a few clean and simple ingredients, you can satisfy those snack cravings while keeping it AIP friendly.
Here are a few of my top picks, and why they’re so great:
Who doesn’t love a good chip? The crunch and the saltiness are there, but add in a slight sweet flavor from the use of sweet potatoes instead of regular potatoes and you’ve got a match made in heaven. These sweet potato chips are simple, and that what makes them so great. They’re fried in AIP friendly coconut oil, not
inflammatory vegetable oil so it’s a snack you can really feel good about eating and feeding to your family.
Another chip you can crunch on for snacks or even a dessert are DANG’s Sea Salt Toasted Coconut Chips. Just salt and coconut is all you’ll find in these chips, however the coconut has a naturally sweet flavor that will help soothe your sweet tooth without any added sugar or unnecessary ingredients (win, win!) In the past, coconut was avoided for being high in fat, but these days people are wising up to good fats, full of lauric acid, MCT’s, more and more studies and reports are coming out about coconut and it’s benefits, including weight loss, immunity, and cognitive enhancement.
Ever wish you could eat cookie dough by the spoonful? This is kind of like that, except it’s fatty, rich, decadent coconut. This Coconut Manna by Nutiva is pure coconut meat, ground into a butter, then jarred up for your drizzling, or scooping pleasure. Just place the jar in some hot water for a few minutes until melted, stir, and drizzle over your favorite fruit. Or, let the mixture set at room temp and scoop it straight from the jar with spoon to enjoy like coconut fudge. Either way you eat it, this stuff feels like a true treat.
Miss nuts and seeds? You’re not alone, AND you’re in luck. Tigernuts are not actually nuts at all, rather, they’re a tubers, but they give the same chew and texture of a nut. They’re slightly sweet, without any overpowering flavor. They’re a great source of prebiotic fiber, so they feed your gut flora which helps with immunity. These are available in peeled, sliced, and even flour. The slightly sweet flavor works great for baking up some homemade treats.
Where my savory snackers at?! This jerky bar by EPIC is the first AIP friendly bar by the meat-centric EPIC Bar company, and it’s actually one of the most delicious ones they make. EPIC uses the best quality meat to make these jerky bars, combined with nuts or fruit, for a protein heavy snack to power you through your day. The Beef Apple Bacon Bar is made with just Grass Fed Beef, Uncured Bacon, Apple, Celery Powder, and Lactic Acid (not from milk.) The combination of the flavors in this bar will melt in your mouth — sweet, savory, fatty, and everything you could want in a meat based treat.
