Toxin-Free Living

Did you know that environmental triggers for Hashimoto’s can be in your household or personal care products? Examine things like soap, laundry detergent, and cleansers for chemicals and ingredients that could be triggering your Hashimoto’s. The Environmental Working Group website has consumer guides that can help you create a healthier home with ratings of hundreds of thousands of household products.

Self-Ordered Testing

Thyroid Panel

When testing thyroid levels, it is important to run a blood test that includes a FULL thyroid panel of 9 or 10 different markers. Most conventional medicine doctors will only run a few thyroid markers to determine the type and dosage of thyroid replacement hormone prescribed. It is very important to maintain adequate thyroid hormone levels at all times. However, be aware that thyroid replacement hormone prescriptions do not address the root cause of Hashimoto’s Autoimmunity or Hypothyroidism, which is why dosages often have to be checked, modified and ultimately increased. In order to address the root cause of thyroid disturbances, a functional medicine specialist will order a full thyroid with up to 10 thyroid markers. These additional holistic markers help determine thyroid imbalances due to brain/thyroid signaling, gut or liver dysfunction, hormone under/over-conversion and more.

Conventional Markers

  • TSH
  • Free T3
  • Free T4

Autoimmune Markers

  • Thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPO Antibodies)
  • Thyroglobulin Antibodies (TG, Anti-TG, ATG or TAA Antibodies)

Holistic Functional Medicine Markers

  • Total T3
  • Total T4
  • T3 Uptake
  • Reverse T3
  • Thyroxine Binding Globulin
  • Free Thyroxine Index (Included in Dr. K’s training but not on Ulta Panel. This can be removed.)

Bring your self-test results along with any additional documentation to a Functional Provider to analyze in further detail. Keeping the journey in an objective format, like thyroid panel markers, in addition to a journal of other key triggers, such as diet and stress levels, helps Hashimoto’s patients to better track and understand when and why symptoms are occurring to avoid future inflammation.
